MESSAGE: A New Legacy                       Date: 6/22/2025

SERIES: Broken Homes

COMMUNICATOR: Pastor Kevin Geer

CHECKING IN: Was there a moment this week where you really felt God’s presence or saw Him at work? What made that moment so powerful or meaningful to you?

Share Wins: How have you experienced the fruit of the Spirit in your life this week? (See Galatians 5:22–23). Have you seen God answer a prayer, remind you of His presence, or use you to encourage someone? In what ways do you see Jesus actively working in your life or in the world around you?

THINK, DISCUSS, LIVE: These questions are ideal for personal devotion or group discussions, guiding you to grow spiritually, engage deeply in biblical community, and live out your faith in the world around you.

  1. Share one insight you gained from this series, or describe a specific action you’ve taken—or are planning to take—to break a cycle of dysfunction in your family.
  2. What does “breaking the chain of dysfunction” mean to you, and how have you seen that play out in your own life or family?
  3. The message challenges us not only to break dysfunction but to “build something better.” What does building a better legacy look like for you?
  4. Psalm 78 talks about passing down God’s stories and commands to future generations. What are some specific ways you are—or could be—doing this in your own family or community?
  5. The above text emphasizes that what we model matters. What are some behaviors or habits you currently model that reflect your faith, and what would you like to model better?
  6. Kevin reflects with gratitude on the people who invested in him. Who are the people whose shoulders you stand on, and how has their investment shaped your journey? When was the last time you thanked them for modeling Jesus and pouring into you?
  7. What does it really mean to “make Jesus the center of your home”? What does that look like in your daily life? And what challenges might you face in living it out consistently?
  8. The idea of “telling your Jesus story” to your family is crucial to passing down your faith. What part of your faith story would you want your children or loved ones to remember most? Why is this part of your faith story so important to you?
  9. This series ends with a powerful truth: “God calls us out of brokenness to send us into the brokenness of others”—with hope and healing. Do you think stepping into others’ brokenness is optional for followers of Jesus, or is it something we’re clearly called to do? What might it look like to live that out in everyday life?
  10. Take a moment to read Judges 2:6–12—honestly, one of the saddest passages in the Bible. Why do you think that is? What did the leaders fail to do? And what happened as a result to the next generation?
  11. How does this passage challenge or inspire you to share your Jesus story and model a life of faith for your friends, family or the next generation? Please be specific.
  12. TAKING NEW GROUND! This week, take new ground by identifying the areas of dysfunction you’re working to overcome. Reflect on the progress you’re making and the healthy patterns you’re striving to build—especially in your relationships. Set aside time to process these thoughts with a trusted, spiritually grounded friend or family member. Then, ask God to show you the people in your life who may be walking through brokenness. Pray for clarity on how you can encourage, love, and walk alongside them in meaningful, Spirit-led ways.

THE TRANSFORMATIONAL MODEL: Update your current position within the Canvas Circle, Jesus Friends Circle, and Lost Friends Circle. In what specific ways are you growing more like Jesus, reflecting His love and teachings to others, and drawing closer to the center of the diagram?

2025 LIFE CHANGE CHALLENGE: We’ve created a Bible reading plan to help us go through the entire New Testament in a year. Read or listen to just one chapter a day, five days a week. Simply go to the Canvas Church app. and click on ‘Bible Reading Plan.’ If you prefer to listen, that option is available too! Join us on this life changing journey!

INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PRAYER OPTIONS: “A maturing community is a confessing community—not a church without sin, but a church without secrets.”― Tyler Staton, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools: An Invitation to the Wonder and Mystery of Prayer

  1. Praise Sentences: Take a moment to offer short sentence prayers of thanks to God for who He is and what He has done this week. Allow multiple people to pray, even more than once. Then, lift up the needs shared within your group. Finish by thanking Him for hearing your prayers.
  2. Invite Jesus into the challenges you or a loved one are facing right now, trusting in His presence and guidance. As you pray aloud, encourage one another with your words.
  3. Pray for the person on your right, it can be out loud or in silence, if in silence nudge the person next to you letting them know you are done.
  4. Prayer Clusters: Meet in groups of two or three (same gender) to share praises and prayer requests. Pray together and for one another during the week. Let those in your group know you prayed—send a quick text of encouragement.

PRAYER PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN: In every situation—big or small—pause and ask, “God, what do You want me to know?” Then ask, “What do You want me to do?” It could be something simple or something big. Try it this week and see how God shows up! Make sure you tell someone what God is doing in and through you!
