WORDS THAT IGNITE: Prophecy
The Greek word most often translated as “prophecy” in the New Testament is προφητεία (prophēteia). Literally, it means “to speak forth” or “to speak on behalf of God.” It involves declaring God’s message, which can include:
Foretelling future events (predictive aspect).
Exhorting, encouraging, or instructing God’s people (edifying aspect).
So prophecy is not just predicting the future—it’s speaking God’s truth into a situation.
How will you put this word into action and let it ignite your life this week?

THINK, DISCUSS, LIVE: These questions are great for personal reflection, group discussion, or both. They’re meant to help you grow in your faith, deepen your connection with your Jesus friends, and live it out in the world around you.
Can you think of a time you were in a real storm—maybe a thunderstorm, snowstorm, or even a wild windstorm—that left you feeling scared, out of control, or even totally exhilarated? What was that like?
We love knowing the weather because it helps us prepare. What’s one area of life where you wish you could get a clear and accurate forecast from God?
When has life felt unpredictable or stormy for you lately? How are you weathering the storm and what helps you stay grounded when you don’t know the “forecast”?
The prophets waited for generations for the Messiah and often cried out, “How long, O Lord?” Have you ever experienced that same tension of waiting on God—an unanswered prayer, a long season of stagnation, or underlying fear and doubt? What does/did that feel like for you?
Read Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7. Jesus’ birth fulfilled centuries of promises. How does seeing God keep big promises in Scripture help you trust Him with the personal promises in your own life? Please elaborate.
Which of God’s promises—like His peace, presence, strength, forgiveness, or provision—have you experienced in the middle of a life storm? And which one is the hardest for you to hold onto when things feel out of control?
Advent is about remembering and looking forward. How do you stay hopeful during the “already, but not yet” period—that time when God’s promises are true, but you haven’t seen them fully come to pass yet?
Of all the prophecies about the coming Messiah, which one amazes you most in how precisely it was fulfilled—His birth in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), betrayal by a friend (Psalm 41:9), betrayal for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12), riding into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9), His crucifixion and pierced hands and feet (Psalm 22:16), remaining silent before His accusers (Isaiah 53:7), or being buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9)? When life feels stormy, how do these truths actually help you keep moving forward in the moment?
Hebrews 11:13 says God’s people “died still believing what God had promised them… they saw it from a distance and welcomed it.” How does this verse give you hope—even when you may not see all of God’s promises fully fulfilled in your lifetime?
If God’s faithfulness anchors us in the storm, what’s one promise from Scripture you want to hold onto more tightly this week?
TAKING NEW GROUND: This week, look for simple ways to encourage someone’s faith. Here are a few ideas:
Ask a Jesus friend which areas of their faith journey do they feel they’re growing in and which areas they’re still working on.
Share your own experiences and examples with the same question.
Pray together, asking God to grow your love for Him and the character of Jesus in both of your lives.
