WORDS THAT IGNITE: Remain

The Greek word: μένω (ménō) It means to stay, remain, dwell, continue, or persist in relationship. In this case staying connected and thriving with God.

Two examples of how ménō is used in Scripture:

  1. John 15:4. Remain in me, and I will remain in you.”
Describes staying relationally connected to Jesus like a branch stays connected to a vine.
  2. John 1:38–39. They went and stayed (ménō) with Him that day.
Here it refers to physically staying or dwelling with Jesus.

How will you put this word into action and let it ignite your life this week?

THINK, DISCUSS, LIVE: These questions are great for personal reflection, group discussion, or both. They’re meant to help you grow in your faith, deepen your connection with your Jesus friends, and live it out in the world around you.

  1. If you could instantly grow one plant, flower, or tree in your yard with zero effort, what would you choose and why?
  2. After reading John 15:1–17, how would you describe the different parts of Jesus’ illustration? Who’s the vine, who’s the gardener, who are the branches—and what does each one do?
  3. Jesus talks about pruning healthy branches so they can grow stronger. What’s one area of your life where you sense God might be pruning you right now?
  4. When you look at the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22–23), which one feels most natural for you—and which one do you wish showed up more in your life?
  5. In John 15:5–6, Jesus says we can’t produce fruit on our own. Why do you think that is? And what usually happens when we try to do it in our own strength? Can you think of a time in your own life when this proved true?”
  6. Jesus says, “Remain in me.” What does staying connected to Jesus look like for you on a normal day? What helps you stay connected to Him?
  7. When you think about your time, talent, and treasure, which one feels easiest for God to shape—and which one feels the hardest? Why do you think that is?
  8. What are some common “barriers to fruitfulness” you’ve noticed in your own life or in people around you?
  9. Since God the Father is the gardener of your life, where do you think He would say you’re producing good, lasting fruit? And what areas might He gently point out as needing some pruning?
  10. Who in your life needs to experience more of the ‘fruit’ God is growing in you—like your love, joy, patience, or encouragement? And how could you intentionally bless them with that this week?

TAKING NEW GROUND: This week, taking new ground means letting go of self-reliance and remaining deeply connected to Jesus so His life flows through you and transforms those around you. Here are some ideas:

  • Abide Daily: Set aside 10–15 minutes each day for prayer/praise, Scripture, and or quiet reflection. Be reminded that He is the true treasure of your life.
  • Invite God to Prune: Ask God to reveal one area of your life that needs pruning, something that’s hindering growth or fruitfulness.
  • Use Your Gifts to Serve Others: Identify one way you can encourage, serve, or bless someone this week using your talents, time, or treasure.

PRAYER OPTIONS:

  • 1 & 1:  One thing to celebrate, one thing to bring to God.
  • Anoint with Oil: Hold a time of prayer for healing, either for yourself if you need it, or standing in faith for someone you know who needs God’s touch.
  • Prayer Partnership: What’s on your heart that we can partner with you and bring it to the Lord?
  • Praise Sentences: Short prayers thanking God, then pray for shared needs.
  • Prayer Clusters: Groups of 2–3, share requests, pray together, and encourage each other during the week.
