WORDS THAT IGNITE: Light

  • The Greek word: “I am the light (phōs) of the world.”
  • Jesus is saying He is the source of spiritual truth, moral purity, and divine revelation — not just a guide to light, but Light itself. He doesn’t just show the way — He is the way.
  • As His followers, (disciples) He tells us that we are “the light of the world”. (Matt. 5:14-16) So shine your light so all may experience it.
  • How will you put this word into action and let it ignite your life this week?

THINK, DISCUSS, LIVE: These questions are great for personal reflection, group discussion, or both. They’re meant to help you grow in your faith, deepen your connection with your Jesus friends, and live it out in the world around you.

  1. Were you ever afraid of the dark as a kid? Be honest—night-light, closet light, or flashlight under the covers?
  2. The people at the Festival of Tabernacles celebrated God’s faithfulness. How does remembering what God has done help you trust Him today? Can you share an example?
  3. When Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12), what do you think He wanted people to understand about who He is?
  4. Read Matthew 5:14–16. Imagine being one of the disciples hearing Jesus say you are the light of the world—what thoughts, emotions or actions might you have had?
  5. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world.” What are some simple ways you (or your group) can shine the light of Jesus in your home, workplace, or community?
  6. Light reveals what’s hidden. Why do you think people sometimes prefer to stay in the dark rather than step into Jesus’ light? Can you provide some examples?
  7. How has following Jesus helped you “see” more clearly in life—about yourself, others, or God’s purpose for you?
  8. Ephesians 5:8 says, “Now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!” What’s one way you can live like a person of light this week at home, work, or in your community?
  9. Read John 1:5. Darkness loses its power when it’s exposed to light. Is there an area of your life that needs to be brought into Jesus’ light—something to confess, forgive, or surrender? How can the group pray with you in that?

TAKING NEW GROUND: This week, look for simple ways to be light in the places that you influence. Home, work, neighborhood, places of commerce.

Here are some ideas:

  • Smile and say “hi’ to people you see asking them how their day is going.
  • Text a friend or family member and leave an encouraging message or Bible verse.
  • Treat someone to coffee or a meal letting them know how much you appreciate them and how much God loves them.

PRAYER OPTIONS:

  • 1 & 1:  One thing to celebrate, one thing to bring to God.
  • Praise Sentences: Short prayers thanking God, then pray for shared needs.
  • Prayer Clusters: Groups of 2–3, share requests, pray together, and encourage each other during the week.
