THINK, DISCUSS, LIVE: These questions are great for personal reflection, group discussion, or both. They’re meant to help you grow in your faith, deepen your connection with your Jesus friends, and live it out in the world around you.

  1. Who is someone you respect so deeply that being in their presence would make you a little nervous—maybe even tongue-tied? What is it about them—their character, their authority, their influence—that creates that kind of response in you?

  2. Read Luke 19:30–31; Zechariah 9:9.What does Jesus riding on a donkey’s colt—rather than a war horse—reveal about the kind of King He is? How would this have challenged the expectations of the people in His day? How does it challenge your own expectations of how God should move and work in your life?

  3. Read Luke 19:38; Psalm 118:26. Why do our expectations of Jesus sometimes fail to align with God’s plan? In what ways are we tempted to reshape Jesus to fit our own assumptions, desires, goals, or personal agendas?

  4. Read Luke 19:35–36; Exodus 12:3–7. What is significant about the timing of Jesus’ arrival? Which do you most identify Jesus as—King or Lamb and why? How does seeing Jesus as both King and Sacrificial Lamb help your understanding and purpose of the cross?

  5. Read Luke 19:38. What is the difference between worshiping Jesus for who He reveals Himself to be in Scripture and worshiping Him for who we imagine He is? Have you ever caught yourself treating Jesus more like a solution to your problems or prosperity rather than the King of your life? Any examples?

  6. Read Luke 19:41–42. What does this moment reveal about the heart of Jesus? Why does He weep? Do you think our sin and spiritual blindness grieve His heart in the same way? Why or why not?

  7. Read Luke 19:44. Why do you think the people missed Jesus even when He was right in front of them? How do you think people miss Jesus today?  What distractions (busyness, comfort, sin, culture, material things) might dull our spiritual awareness of Him today?

  8. Read John 18:36; Matthew 20:25–28. How is Jesus’ kingdom different from the kingdoms of this world? What would it look like for your everyday life to truly reflect the values of His Kingdom?

  9. Read Luke 9:23 and John 14:6. Following Jesus as King means He sets the direction. He defines truth. He determines the pace. Adding Him to your life, on the other hand, often means you stay in control and simply invite Him to bless what you’ve already decided. What does it practically look like for you to follow Jesus as King instead of simply adding Him to your life? Can you identify the difference in your own life right now?

  10. Making Jesus King is a significant step in the life of a Christ follower. Who in your life has the spiritual maturity and honesty to speak truth to you—and whom you can intentionally invite to help you discern where you still need to grow? And as you consider Jesus’ authority in your life, what specific shifts in your thinking, priorities, habits, or rhythms would help make His Kingship more than just a belief, but a lived reality?
